Located approximately 85m miles southwest of Oklahoma City on Interstate 44, Lawton is the third largest city in Oklahoma. Fort Sill, located just north of the city, is home of the United States Army Field Artillery.
At the Lawton/Fort Sill Historic Landmark & Museum, visitors can see a large collection of 20th century artillery known as the Cannon Walk, view historic buildings originally constructed by Buffalo Soldiers and visit the famous Native American burial sites of Geronimo and Quanah Parker. The Mattie Beal Home, a 14-room Italian and Greek Revival-style mansion constructed in 1909, sits on a portion of the 160 acres selected by Mattie Beal when her name was drawn in the 1901 Oklahoma Territory Land Lottery. The home has been completely restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Holy City of the Wichitas is a replica of the city of Jerusalem with 22 buildings made of native granite stone. The nation's longest-running Easter passion play, The Prince of Peace is held here each year in a natural amphitheatre.
Lawton is located in the heart of the Great Plains Country, an area well known for its lakes and world-class fishing and hunting. Mount Scott, which rises 2,500 feet above the plains, provides some of the most breathtaking scenery in the state and a chance to view free-roaming bison, longhorn cattle, white-tail deer and elk. Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, established in 1901, provides habitat for these large grazing animals on its 59,020 acres. The refuge is also home to almost 400 species of animals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and more than 800 plant species.
