THE COMMUNITY
Granbury, nestled on the banks of a 30-mile recreational lake and boasting a restored historical district, is a lovely resort community with exquisite dining and shopping amenities located 35 miles southwest of Fort Worth. Several gated communities — two of which have private golf courses — offer beautiful, affordable homes, some of which back up to canals and have private boat docks providing easy access to the lake. The historic area exhibits the Victorian courthouse square, established in 1871 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974, as well as the Granbury Opera House, built in 1886 and restored in the early 1970s offering plays, musicals and original productions 11 months of the year. Granbury hosts an array of lovely antique and art galleries, Victorian bed and breakfasts, and dining pleasures from country to gourmet. In addition, the town is embraced by Lake Granbury offering fishing, swimming, water-skiing and sailing.
The population of Hood County is projected to increase to more than 96,000 within the next 10 years. The level of growth the county has experienced has made it one of the fastest growing counties in the state.
RECREATION
Sports enthusiasts can be challenged by the five public and six private golf courses or the first-rate tennis facilities. Created in 1969 when the Brazos River was dammed, scenic Lake Granbury has 103 miles of shoreline and 8,500 acres of surface area for water sports and relaxation. A majestic Mississippi River-style paddlewheel riverboat offers regular excursions plus charter cruises on the lake. Several campgrounds and RV parks give campers a quiet retreat amidst the natural beauty of the Brazos River Valley. Miniature golf, a circa 1950s drive-in theater, bowling, skating and catfish ponds offer other alternatives for family participation. Granbury is just a short drive away from outdoor adventures at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center and Dinosaur Valley State Park.
EDUCATION
The Granbury Independent School District has soared in growth because of its proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and its beautiful setting on picturesque Lake Granbury. Since completion of Lake Granbury in 1969, the district has grown from a small, rural district to one with an enrollment of over 5,800 students. The district anticipates an average annual growth of four percent for the next 10 years. In addition, Tarleton State University has opened a satellite campus in Granbury offering college courses at the former Chrysallis Cultural Center as well as continuing the center’s tradition of cultural programs.
