Summary:

A Registered Professional Dialysis Nurse is responsible for the delivery of patient care through the process of assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation. This position participates in the development and implementation of individualized and comprehensive plan of care for each patient, provides direct and indirect care to patients as it relates to their dialysis treatment, including pre- and post-assessments, and administrations of medications during dialysis. In addition, the Registered Professional Dialysis Nurse operates all dialysis equipment and supplies in accordance with hospital and departmental policy to provide expected patient outcome and documents in the medical record accordingly.

CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels (CSRH-NB), nestled in the heart of downtown New Braunfels, is a full-service, 94-private bed facility that continues to expand to meet the needs of New Braunfels’ strong population growth. Innovative equipment and procedures are utilized, including an Outpatient Imaging Center, orthopedic and surgical services, rehabilitation, a renovated birthing center, including 24/7 neonatal coverage, emergency care, wound care/hyperbaric center, 3D mammography, and comprehensive heart care, from diagnostics to open-heart surgery. 

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates appropriate hand hygiene, use of PPE, and facility hygiene including cleaning and disinfection of work surfaces and equipment per hospital and departmental policies.
  • Operates all available dialysis equipment and supplies based on safety, effectiveness, and cost in accordance with hospital and departmental policy to provide expected patient outcome; documents in the medical record and records changes appropriately.
  • Follows policy and procedure in performance of water treatment procedures and testing; properly demonstrates electrolyte addition to acid concentrate per physician order.
  • Provides documented pre- and post-dialysis nursing assessments that include, but are not limited to; patient weight and fluid removal calculations, lung sounds and presence of edema, vital signs and review of current labs, assessment and care of the dialysis access.
  • Obtains pre- and post-dialysis lab specimens per physician order and hospital/departmental policy.
  • Initiates, monitors, and terminates each dialysis treatment per departmental policy and procedure.
  • Follows hospital and departmental policy and procedure in response to dialysis-related complications, emergencies, and technical issues.
  • Follows hospital and departmental policy and procedure in the administration of medications during dialysis.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of an individualized and comprehensive plan of care for each patient.

Requirements:

Education/Skills

  • Graduate of a Registered Nursing program, Bachelor Degree preferred
  • Excellent customer service, negotiation and communication skills

Experience

  • At least 6 months dialysis experience preferred
  • 12 months acute clinical experience as a Registered Nurse required
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU), Critical Care Unit (CCU), Emergency Room (ER), or Medical Surgical (Med Surg) experience is preferred
  • Clinical patient care experience in a relevant setting, preferred
  • Previous healthcare management experience, preferred

Additional Information

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications

  • RN license in good standing in state of employment or a compact state , if applicable
  • Registered Nurse (RN) required
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support
  • Certification in Nephrology Nursing preferred

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications (include all that are on the RN JD plus these):

A Water Treatment Knowledge Exam- within twelve (12) weeks of employmentA Hemodialysis Knowledge Exam- within twelve (12) weeks of employmentCertification in Nephrology Nursing preferred, required within 1 year of eligibility to take the exam
