The Audiologist will be responsible for providing a wide range of audiological services to adults and children. This includes diagnosing, evaluating, and treating hearing and balance problems. The Audiologist will also provide counseling and support to patients and their families. Audiologists and Physicians have a collaborative relationship, which ensures that our patients receive excellent hearing health care.
Audiologist Duties and Responsibilities
- Diagnose and evaluate hearing and balance disorders.
- Provide in-service education to patients and families on hearing loss, balance disorders, hearing aids, and other assistive technology.
- Provide appropriate hearing aid technology and aftercare of dispensing services such as hearing aid fittings, troubleshooting, conducting repairs to hearing aids, earmolds and cleaning of hearing aids.
- Educate and train hearing aid users
- Create treatment plans and follow-up care in collaboration with physicians
- Provide counseling and support to patients and families
- Refer patients to other healthcare professionals, when necessary
- Maintain accurate records and patient files
Some responsibilities that audiologists may have include:
- Examining patients for ear, hearing, or balance problems and administering diagnostic tests including Basic audiometry (air, bone, speech), OAE screenings, Tympanometry, VRA and play audiometry and vestibular testing
- Interpreting diagnostic tests, such as audiometry evaluations and vestibular testing
- Assessment of various electrophysiologic responses, including basic suprathreshold auditory evoked response; will have some exposure to threshold evaluation using auditory evoked response
- Creating treatment plans to meet patients' goals
- Fitting patients with hearing aids or other assistive listening devices
- Counseling patients and their families on how to listen and communicate
- Evaluating patients regularly to monitor their condition and modify treatment plans
- Recording patient progress
- Researching the causes and treatment of hearing and balance disorders
- Collaborating with other medical professionals
- Following all medical laws, guidelines, regulations, and standards
- Some skills that audiologists may need include:
- Ability to relate to individuals of all ages
- Above-average communication, language, and interpersonal skills
- Unimpaired or corrected hearing/listening skills
- Skill in preparing written patient evaluations
Audiologist Requirements and Qualifications
- Doctor of Audiology (AuD) degree or equivalent from an accredited program
- Licensure/certification in audiology
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of hearing aid technology, assistive devices, and rehabilitation protocols
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
